The term Kumbh is taken from the immortal pot of nectar or Amrit for which the demons and Devtas fought over as per ancient Puranas. It is believed that the demons then chased Devtas for many years.
And, during this time, the drops of Amrit or Kumbh dropped at four different places. These places are Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain. Moreover, astrologers also believe that these four places are filled with mystical and unexplained powers.
Kumbh Mela is an ancient religious festival that is celebrated four times over a cycle of 12 years. The pilgrims rotate at the four pilgrimage places on the banks of four sacred rivers. At Haridwar, they shall be on the River Ganga, at Nashik on the River Godavari, at Ujjain on the River Shipra and at the confluence of the three major rivers of Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati in Prayag (New Allahabad).
The celestial positions of the Sun, Moon and the planet of Jupiter determine the time and date of Kumbh Mela. It is considered to be the most auspicious time and the times when the river banks are full packed with pilgrimages.
